Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)

The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program of Southwestern University PHINMA will produce veterinarians who specialize in urban-based small animal practice with exemplary skills in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases and surgery. The graduate will have entrepreneurial and managerial skills and a keen understanding of the needs of pet owners and their pets. The graduate will likewise have a sound understanding of the principles of One Health and be able to apply them in safeguarding the health of both animals and humans and the protection of the environment.

The DVM Program is a six-year professional course. The program includes basic and clinical courses which provide the student the foundation knowledge and skills in veterinary medicine that are needed for the successful prevention, diagnosis, treatment and control of diseases in domestic, aquatic, laboratory and wildlife animals. The courses are presented through the active learning modality giving the student the opportunity to actively engage in the information they are learning.

Program Expected Learning Outcomes

Apply their knowledge of the foundation principles underlying animal production, animal health and diseases to develop and formulate plans and programs for the prevention, treatment and control of animal diseases.


Use their experience with modern diagnostic methods, together with their well-developed clinical and critical thinking skills, to accurately diagnose diseases and formulate protocols for disease prevention, treatment and control.


Demonstrate the skills needed to engage in entrepreneurial ventures in the various fields of veterinary medical practice especially urban-based small animal practice.


Demonstrate the empathy necessary for the care of companion pet animals and to meet the needs of their owners.


Effectively communicate orally and in writing, in both English and Filipino languages, the veterinary concepts in simple terms that can be understood by laypersons.


Bring about new knowledge through research and share this knowledge with the relevant stakeholders.


Make educated decisions with regards to euthanasia and culling of animals for the purpose of ending animal suffering and the control of the spread of animal diseases.


Demonstrate a sound understanding and the ability to apply the principles of One Health and the interrelatedness between animals, people and the environment.


Show compassion and concern for the welfare and ethical treatment of all animals.


Work both independently and cooperatively with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams.


Discuss new developments and trends in veterinary practice.


Demonstrate a commitment to professionalism in all aspects of the veterinary field and act in accordance with social and ethical standards.


Demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning and self-improvement by engaging in continuing education.
