To give significant insights in today’s pandemic-challenged businesses, Southwestern University PHINMA’s B-School once again held Business Next Forum on Wednesday, October 20, 2021. The event gathered business leaders, entrepreneurs, industry practitioners and mentors including those from the academe, students taking up business and those aspiring to build their own business.

SWU PHINMA through its Business School launched Business Next Forum in October 2019 with Accenture Philippines Country Managing Director, Lito Tayag as guest speaker on “Digital Transformation: The “Wise Pivot”.

In this year’s forum, seasoned IT professional Aileen Judan – Jiao, President and Country General Manager of tech giant IBM Philippines, an Information Technology organization that serves domestic and international clients, talked about “Big Data and Analytics for Value Creation and Business Insights”.

In her talk, Jiao emphasized the relevance and impact of Big Data and Analytics on business and people. According to Jiao, “data is the new currency and every company must be a data company”, to remain relevant and competitive under any circumstance.

The ideas presented stimulated the business sector of Cebu, led by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) to use and exploit data analytics in making data driven decisions for sound business outcomes. In response to IBM’s presentation, Felix Taguiam, President of CCCI, said that the benefits of Big Data & Analytics include strategic Marketing approach, new revenue opportunities, customer personification and improved operational efficacy that will provide competitive advantages to businesses.

Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the only Chamber of Commerce outside Metro Manila with an ISO Certification, is one of SWU PHINMA B-School’s industry partners in transforming business students into competent future business leaders and professionals.

Dr. Chito Salazar, the President of Southwestern University PHINMA reiterated in his closing remarks that Business Next is another platform of the university to bridge the gap between the academe & industry. Salazar said that SWU structured business program to maximize partnerships with the industry like the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and IBM Philippines in exposing students to people who are practitioners in business. This is part of SWU PHINMA B-School’s thrust in guiding students to become the best so they can land in the best possible job and rise to the peak of their profession.

With the timely Business Next topics, Aileen Judan – Jiao commended SWU PHINMA for having the foresight in bringing significant discussions which present real scenarios in the business world including the necessary shifts in the way business is done.

SWU PHINMA achieves 100% Passing Rate in Nepal Medical Board Exams

All eighteen Nepalese graduates of Southwestern University PHINMA’s (SWU PHINMA) batch of July 2020 attained a 100% passing rate in their home country’s recently concluded Medical Council Licensure Examination. The newly licensed doctors are among the 50.9% of takers who passed the exams in August 2021.

Established in 1951, SWU PHINMA takes pride in being the first medical school outside Manila. It has a longstanding reputation of training and educating physicians from different parts of the world, now home to international students coming from 37 countries across 5 continents. Since 2019, SWU PHINMA has had the most number of Nepalese students out of all the universities in the country.

“SWU PHINMA in Cebu City was our second home for the past seven years. We went there with the aim of becoming medical doctors which we have finally accomplished. As we indulged in the lively school atmosphere and the hospitable Cebuano culture, we never knew seven years had already passed. We all are proud to have SWU PHINMA as our alma mater,” said Dr. Binod Rijal, former President of SWU PHINMA International Student Association.

SWU PHINMA’s international students benefit from a safe campus environment, comfortable study spaces, up-to-date medical libraries and facilities, and activities that celebrate their respective cultures. “Whether it be studies or other activities like celebrating our Nepali New Year here, my experience was definitely fun and memorable,” remarked Dr. Saiby Pandey. I will always miss the hospitality of the Cebuanos, the seafood and of course the beautiful beaches.”

Albert L. Gamboa, Chief Operations Officer of SWU PHINMA, explained that the university considers its international student population and their licensure examination results a major indication of the university’s quality of education. He continued, “We strive to keep our standards high and our resources and facilities world-class for the benefit of all our students. We are overjoyed for our eighteen Nepalese graduates, as well as our recent topnotchers and passers of the Philippine 2020 Physician Licensure Exams.”

In the October 2020 Physician Licensure Examinations, three SWU PHINMA graduates namely Dr. April Jean Gapo, Dr. Jessah April Naingue, and Dr. Carren Emirose Solidor placed 8th, 9th, and 10th respectively. SWU PHINMA was the only Cebu-based medical school with graduates included in the top 10. The university had an 80% passing rate for its first-time takers.

“Our mission is to make lives better through education. We hope that our graduates will likewise make lives better as they begin their careers as licensed physicians, wherever they may find themselves in the world,” continued Gamboa. And indeed, he is not far off. Dr. Jagadish Thapa of Batch 2020 for instance said, “Right now, I am planning to go to rural areas of my country and work there. After working for a while, I want to pursue my residency in Orthopedics Surgery and become one of the best in Nepal, so that I can make a difference in the lives of my countrymen.”

SWU PHINMA in Cebu City, acquired by PHINMA Education in 2014, works with NorthFACE International Educational Consultancy to bring aspiring doctors from Nepal to study in the Philippines. PHINMA Education owns and operates nine colleges and universities across the Philippines and manages one in West Java, Indonesia through Horizon Education. It has an 80% average first-time passing rate for licensure exams with some 82% of students getting hired within a year of graduation. It has had 104 Filipino board exam topnotchers since its inception in 2004.

SWU B-School Business Next 2021

The Business Next 2021 of the B-School of Southwestern University PHINMA will bring data revolution in the “Big Data and Analytics” Forum on October 20, 2021.

In 2019, SWU PHINMA launched the Business Next “Digital Transformation: Wise Pivot” Forum to the business community of Cebu with the Country Managing Director of Accenture Philippines, Lito Tayag, as guest speaker. The forum paved way on organizational change issues and high correlation of technological adaptations to revenue growth of businesses.

This year’s Business Next Forum of B-School will highlight Big Data and Analytics and its role in business with a distinguished speaker, another expert in the IT Industry, a seasoned IT Professional and digital transformation champion, Aileen Judan – Jiao, the President and Country General Manager of IBM Philippines.

Participants from the industry and government sectors, including those from the academe, and students taking up business and those aspiring to build their own business, are expected to join this annual business event of the B-School of SWU PHINMA.

Felix Taguiam, the President of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry will be giving the business community’s response to the topic of the forum.
